Bargain

The fairy returned the child exactly as promised.

Annoyingly, there was no one left to return it to. She'd promised the mother wealth and reputation, but the fairy had forgotten to check the time.

She brought a pitcher of water, the only wealth that still mattered, and a splendid reputation amongst vultures. The dead neither drank nor cared.

"Huh." She looked at the babe. "Pity."
